Cons:
DO NOT GET MARRIED HERE! Some of the Staff was friendly and helpful, but there is ONE horrendous woman who will ruin your entire evening. Her name was unclear, but possibly Kathy or Kathleen. Supposedly her title is "HOSTESS" but she is NOT EVEN CLOSE to a Gracious Host" More like HOSTZILLA!
Beautiful location
It got so bad that the BRIDE remained in the reception area long after she should have. She should have been able to enjoy her beautiful night and celebration without having to worry about anything in the end.
Boat docking available
2) More time to set up -- SHF only allows 1/2 an hour to set up before a wedding. We had to buy an extra hour to set up (9:30-11am) and even then that was not enough time for our poor caterer to get everything together. They were scrambling right up to the last second to get everything set up. It was lucky they got everything finished. SHF needs to allow more time for caterering companies to set up in the morning, preferably 2 to 2.5 hours.
BRIDES BEWARE! Staff unprofessional. 3 Staff walked around the tent 30 minutes prior to the end of the reception In front of guests with clipboards in hand. Shaking their heads. Kept our deposit. We used the finest caterer in town with extra staff. Would never recommend for other weddings. Will be suing for the full return of our stolen deposit.
Tent is great in case you need a backup for rainy situations
ONLY added 1 Star because Google wont let me post as ZERO!
Nice for fishing
Very beautiful and lots to do and see!
I am a Catering Sales Manager for a Hotel in Virginia and I would never treat or speak to clients or other vendors as she did.
3) Staff -- I know this is a bit silly, but as I was standing in the house ready to walk down the aisle to the altar, SHF's hostess looked straight at me and said "When will the bride be coming downstairs?" I looked at her, stunned, and I said "Umm... I am the bride!" I had white dress (though plainer than most dresses these days, it was still a wedding dress!), a huge bouquet, and my hair and makeup was done beautifully. I asked her "Why do you think I'm not the bride?" and she said "Oh I'm sorry, I've never seen a bride so in charge before." Well that was kind of annoying and slightly rude, and right before I had to walk down the aisle! It totally messed up my moment of clarity and calm, but I pulled through it, forced a smile on my face, looked at her and said "Excuse me, I am going to get married now." Needless to say, the hostess should have come up to the bridal suite and acquainted herself with me BEFORE the big moment. It was kind of funny, something I'll laugh at for the rest of my life, but from the venue's perspective, it was very tacky and stupid, and they should train their staff better on that sort of stuff.
Some would call her "other" names, However, I'm sure those of you who have used this venue before, are already aware.
Huge grassy field for kids to run around, fly kites, play ball
Needless to say, I will NEVER recommend this venue to anyone, because of this ONE staff member. I do this for a living and ONE person will ruin it for everyone, and SHE most certainly is.
She was extremely rude, condescending, NOT helpful, except for one woman that I experienced throughout the evening. She clearly needs Etiquette training, or maybe a basic simple manners class???
Pros:
We were married at Swan Harbor Farm (SHF) in June 09. It was absolutely beautiful. Here is a list of pros & cons:
Flexibility with catering - you choose your caterer and other vendors. This is nice to not have to be locked into a "preferred list", thus we got an excellent all natural/organic caterer/restaurant with amazing food.
1) Remote control airplanes -- we were married in the morning under the big tree @ SHF. Our wedding day happened to be the same day as the remote control airplane club's annual open house, which took place in the field next to SHF. We obviously didn't want the annoying sound of plane engines overhead while we were saying our vows, so one week before the wedding we politely asked the VP of the airplane club to ground the planes for 1/2 an hour while we had our ceremony. He said no. We called SHF and told them of the problem, but initially they were not helpful. We told them WE were the paying customers, and we had to threaten to find another ceremony site (1 week before the wedding) in order to make them take action. Eventually, SHF staff did call and get the airplane club to ground the planes during our ceremony, but they should have done that from the beginning without us threatening to find another ceremony site. Bottom line, it's not good customer service.
Tons of great photo opps
